4 types of wall ovens
Relying on the ideal oven for your cooking needs is a great way to pull your kitchen together. With their sleek design and flexible installation, wall ovens bring style and convenience to your space.
The following guide will break down the differences between four types of wall ovens – single wall ovens, double wall ovens, microwave wall oven combinations and smart wall ovens. Read on to find a style that complements your creative process.
What is a wall oven?
Like a range oven, a wall oven allows you to make delicious baked, broiled or roasted dishes with ease. Wall ovens are installed into the wall or between cabinetry, allowing you to take advantage of even more counter and cabinet space in your kitchen.
Wall ovens can also be installed at a range of heights for added comfort during cooking sessions. From classic roasts to decadent desserts, wall ovens help make mealtimes the ideal time for experimenting with different oven-cooked recipes.
What are the different types of wall ovens?
No matter what type you choose, a wall oven is a productive and powerful way to cook or bake delicious meals. From single wall ovens and double wall ovens to microwave combo units and smart models, there’s sure to be an option that fits your cooking style and preferences.
Before selecting the right model for your kitchen, understanding the differences between the various types of wall ovens can help narrow down your choices. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of four different types of wall ovens—single, double, microwave combo and smart. You’ll also learn about other wall oven features and styles, like conventional vs. convection wall ovens and gas vs. electric models.
Single wall ovens
Single wall ovens can be conveniently installed within a wall, cabinet or beneath counters at your desired height, making them a versatile option for any cooking style.
Double wall ovens
Designed to maximize your ability to create multiple dishes at different temperatures or settings, double wall ovens are a fantastic solution for increasing the functionality of your kitchen. Bake a delicate fish in the top oven while roasting vegetables at high heat in the bottom oven.
Microwave wall oven combinations
Microwave wall oven combinations consolidate cooking tasks by adding a microwave, situated above the wall oven to make a single appliance. This allows you to get creative with the layout of your kitchen. Installing one of these models can help you get your microwave off the countertop or free up space above the cooktop for a decorative hood or additional cabinetry.
Smart wall ovens
Smart wall ovens combine innovative digital tools with flexible cooking methods to unlock the power of technology via WiFi and help you enhance your dishes. Features like voice control, remote monitoring1 and interchangeable attachments on select models like the Smart Oven+ 30" Combination Oven with Powered Attachments from KitchenAid brand allow you to use an internet connection to help streamline kitchen tasks and create with confidence.

Other wall oven types
In addition to the four wall oven types described above, you can also choose between conventional or convection models. While wall ovens are typically electric, there are some gas models available on the market.
Whichever type you select, wall ovens offer reliable cooking results, giving you more control over your kitchen's style and function.
Conventional wall ovens
Conventional wall ovens are more traditional-style ovens that feature heating elements on the top and bottom of the oven cavity. These models cook food by heating the air inside, with heat radiating from the top and bottom of the oven. Dishes placed closer to the heating elements may cook faster in these types of wall ovens.
Convection wall ovens
Convection wall ovens differ from conventional models in that they include a fan that circulates the hot air inside, helping to achieve even cooking when multi-rack baking. Some convection wall ovens also have a True Convection feature that uses an additional heating element in conjunction with the fan to help distribute heat throughout the entire oven cavity.
Gas wall ovens
Gas wall ovens deliver a slightly more humid heat ideal for baking and keeping dishes moist. The high humidity of gas models make them great for creating delicious baked goods like bread or cake.
Electric wall ovens
Electric wall ovens work through cycling heating elements that turn on and off rapidly to promote even, consistent temperatures throughout the cooking process. With their slightly drier heating style, electric wall ovens are ideal for baking, browning, crisping and roasting meals.

Do wall ovens come in different sizes?
Wall ovens come in a variety of standard sizes designed to help you choose the ideal appliance for your preferences. Single, double and combination models come in the following standard wall oven sizes:
Single wall ovens: 24, 27 or 30 inches wide and 27–29 inches high, with depths between 22–24 inches.
Double wall ovens: 24, 27 or 30 inches wide and around 51 inches high, with depths between 22–24 inches.
Combination wall ovens: 24, 27 or 30 inches wide and anywhere between 42–44 inches high, with depths between 22–27 inches.
Do wall ovens need ventilation?
While cooking, most modern wall ovens release air through vents, which are usually located at the bottom of the oven frame for a tight door seal and a sleek appearance. Avoid blocking these vents, which may prevent the oven from properly releasing the hot air.
