WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN OVER-THE-RANGE MICROWAVE

Microwaves became popular in American kitchens in the 1960s, but their evolution since then is what makes them an integral part of modern kitchens. Today’s microwaves boast advanced cooking features and come in various styles, playing a key role in whipping up a range of dishes.

Use this guide to explore what makes an over-the-range microwave different from other types. Discover nine key features and weigh their pros and cons when deciding whether an over-the-range microwave is the right fit for your kitchen.

WHAT IS AN OVER-THE-RANGE MICROWAVE?

An over-the-range microwave blends a microwave's convenience with the power of a range hood. Positioned above the cooktop, these microwaves can heat meals as the integrated hood vents the air below, helping to whisk away smoke, steam and lingering kitchen aromas.

Many over-the-range (OTR) models also feature built-in lighting to illuminate the cooktop below. With a variety of available cooking features—from simple reheating to advanced cooking techniques—these microwaves bring both convenience and versatility to the kitchen.

OTR VS. BUILT-IN VS. COUNTERTOP MICROWAVES: KEY DIFFERENCES

Over-the-range and built-in microwaves may look similar, but their placement and designs set them apart. Built-in microwaves offer flexibility, fitting seamlessly into cabinets or other locations, while over-the-range models are designed specifically for the space above the cooktop and double as range hoods.

Built-ins often feature doors that open like an oven—for easy access—and are often installed above wall ovens. On the other hand, countertop microwaves can go anywhere in the kitchen with enough space, a flat surface and an outlet. Some can be placed in cabinets with a trim kit, but unlike over-the-range models, they lack venting capabilities. No matter the type, microwaves come with a variety of features, from basic to advanced, catering to every kitchen's needs.

OTR MICROWAVES VS. RANGE HOODS: KEY DIFFERENCES

Both over-the-range microwaves and range hoods tackle the rising smoke, grease and steam from your stovetop, but their roles in the kitchen differ. Over-the-range microwaves pull double duty—cooking meals and venting the air above the stovetop—whereas range hoods are purely dedicated to helping clear the air.

Over-the-range microwaves mount between cabinets, while range hoods install under cabinets, on walls or above islands. You can even install a retractable downdraft vent hood—like these models from KitchenAid brand—directly into the countertop behind the cooking surface, then raise and lower it as needed. Range hoods generally pack more venting power, often vent externally and usually have a stronger heat tolerance. Meanwhile, over-the-range microwaves save space, are easier to install and bring multifunctionality to your kitchen.

9 FEATURES OF AN OVER-THE-RANGE MICROWAVE

Over-the-range microwaves can resemble other microwave types in both functionality and aesthetics, but they offer distinct features worth considering. Read on to learn nine features of over-the-range microwaves and how they can enhance your culinary workspace.

1. VENTILATION

Over-the-range microwaves not only cook your food but also function as vent hoods, helping to clear smoke, odors and steam from the kitchen. They’re typically factory set to recirculate air through a filter rather than vent air through ductwork to the outdoors, but some models can convert to external venting. Check your owner’s manual to be sure.

Venting power, measured in CFMs, indicates how much air a vent can suck up in the span of a minute—higher CFMs mean stronger ventilation. Over-the-range microwaves can typically provide up to 200 CFM Motor Class, but select KitchenAid® models can reach up to 500 CFM Motor Class1 for more powerful venting performance.

2. WATTAGE

Higher wattage means more cooking power for your microwave. Most models range from 600 to 1,200 watts with many recipes optimized for 1,000 watts. Look for a microwave with higher wattage for more power to cook your foods quickly.

For instance, all KitchenAid® over-the-range microwaves come equipped with at least 1,000 watts of power. This means you can tackle a variety of cooking tasks with ease—whether you’re reheating leftovers, defrosting ingredients, or even whipping up more complex meals with features on select models like crisping, steaming, air frying, grilling, baking, broiling or convection cooking.

3. LIGHTING

Many over-the-range microwaves come equipped with LED or halogen lights to brighten your stovetop, giving you better visibility while you create. These lights create a soft, inviting glow or provide natural-looking brightness. Select KitchenAid® models even offer adjustable high and low light settings, so you can achieve ideal illumination for cooking or create just the right ambiance in your kitchen.

4. CAPACITY & SIZE

Over-the-range microwaves can come in a variety of sizes and dimensions, but most measure around 30 inches wide, 17 inches high and 15 to 17 inches deep when the door is closed. If you’re tight on space, you can opt for a compact model that’s about 24 inches wide.

With capacities ranging from 1.7 to 2.0 cubic feet, KitchenAid brand also offers low-profile microwave hood combinations that are just 10.3 inches high to give you extra space above the cooktop without compromising on performance. Or, opt for a KitchenAid® over-the-range microwave with a flush, built-in design for installation within a standard 12 ¾-inch cutout, offering a streamlined look and feel.

5. DESIGN

Over-the-range microwaves give your kitchen an integrated look while freeing up counter space. Models are available in a range of colors and finishes, with unique handle options that can add to your kitchen’s look and feel.

Choose a microwave with a discrete pocket handle for a minimalist vibe, or opt for a uniquely crafted handle—like the satin textured handles on select KitchenAid® microwaves—for a bold design element. Decide between classic black or white appliances, or upgrade to popular finishes like the stainless steel or black stainless steel on select KitchenAid® microwaves for a sleek aesthetic.

6. COOKING FUNCTIONS

Over-the-range microwaves go well beyond reheating leftovers. Some—like select KitchenAid® models—offer defrosting, dehydrating, bread proofing, steaming, convection cooking, air frying, roasting and more.

With Crispwave™ Technology on some KitchenAid brand microwaves, you can grill, fry or bake right in your microwave. The Sensor Steam cycle lets you tailor steam cooking for a variety of dishes and Air Fry Mode helps crisp and brown foods with less oil.2 KitchenAid® microwaves with Multifunction Oven modes let you bake, roast, broil or toast at temperatures up to 450℉ using a triple heating element and fan to direct heat where it’s needed.

7. PRESETS

Over-the-range microwave presets let you take the guesswork out of reheating or cooking food. Quick-Touch cycles on select KitchenAid® microwaves simplify cooking for popular dishes like soup, potatoes and popcorn. Some presets, such as Dinner Plate, Fresh Vegetable and Frozen Vegetable, go even further with sensors that detect when your food is heated, automatically adjusting the time and cooking power.

8. TURNTABLE

Most over-the-range microwaves use a turntable to rotate dishes for even cooking, but some models take a different approach. Select KitchenAid® microwaves feature a turntable-free design, which frees up more space for large dishes. Instead of rotating your food, a hidden motor circulates heat throughout the oven, eliminating the need for a traditional turntable.

9. CLEANING

Keeping your microwave clean helps ensure it runs smoothly, and some over-the-range microwaves include features and functions that can help you with the process. Select KitchenAid® models, for instance, include the Steam Cleaning function that helps loosen cooked-on food without the need for harsh cleaners. On the outside, the PrintShield™ Finish resists smudges and fingerprints, so a quick wipe with water and a soft cloth is all it takes to help clean your microwave.

MAINTENANCE & CARE FOR OVER-THE-RANGE MICROWAVES

Regular cleaning can help keep your microwave functioning smoothly. Aim to clean the interior, exterior and turntable on a weekly basis. Grease filters should be cleaned monthly, while the charcoal filter—used to control odors—needs replacing every six months.

To clean the inside, heat a cup of water for two to five minutes in the microwave to create some steam, which can help loosen stuck-on food. Add vinegar, lemon or baking soda to the water for extra deodorizing. When it’s done cooking, wipe everything down. You can clean your dishwasher’s turntable with dish soap and a soft cloth, or reference your owner’s manual to find out if it’s dishwasher safe.

Use a soft cloth with mild cleaner or soapy water to wipe down the exterior. If it’s stainless steel, try affresh® stainless steel cleaning spray for a polished look and rub in the direction of the grain.3
