But your dishwasher not getting enough water can throw a wrench in your routine. The issue may result from an improperly installed drain hose, a broken door latch, a blocked water inlet valve and more.

Why is my dishwasher not filling with water?

If your dishwasher isn’t filling properly, you may notice that dishes aren’t getting clean, or that there’s little to no water in the base of the dishwasher (or on dishes) during a wash cycle. There could be a few reasons why your dishwasher won’t fill with water. It could be an improperly positioned drain hose, a door that’s not fully closed, a water supply that’s turned off or an overfill protection float that’s got something stuck in it.

You may be able to solve these issues on your own using one of these potential fixes, but it’s best to leave disassembly, electric work or plumbing work to the professionals. 1. Improperly positioned drain hose

To help prevent siphoning in your dishwasher, make sure the loop at the end of the drain hose is positioned at least 20 inches above the floor or subfloor. Connect the drain hose securely to the waste tee or disposal inlet, ensuring it is placed at the proper height. This may help the dishwasher tub fill properly.

2. Door open or unlatched

Most dishwashers are programmed not to start if the appliance detects that the door is still open. To help ensure the dishwasher fills with water, make sure the door is closed properly. If you see a flashing START/RESUME light, it usually means the door is open or unlatched. Simply close the door and press the START/RESUME button to continue the cycle.

If the door won’t close, remember to check for any partially closed racks, utensils or debris that may be causing an obstruction. If the door still won’t latch, inspect the door latch for damage.

3. Blocked water inlet valve

The water inlet valve controls water flow into the dishwasher. It is usually located at the base of the inner left panel. Clean any buildup around the valve using towels and check for blockages with a flashlight. It’s best to call a professional to address any electrical or mechanical issues with the valve, rather than to attempt to fix them yourself.

4. Obstructed overfill protection float

A dishwasher’s overfill protection float helps prevent the dishwasher from overfilling, and needs to be in the right place for your dishwasher to function as it should. If it can’t move freely, it may not properly gauge your dishwasher’s water levels. On some models, it is located in the front right corner. If your dishwasher is a newer model, it’s recommended to have a professional inspect it.

To check the float, move it up and down to ensure it moves freely. Remove any obstructions, if necessary. See your owner’s manual for more information about locating and checking the float.

5. Water supply valve closed

If your dishwasher isn’t filling with water, make sure the water supply valve is open. Unlike the inlet valve, which is located on the dishwasher and controls the flow of water into the unit from the supply line, the water supply line allows your home’s water to flow freely to the dishwasher. Locate the water supply valve for the dishwasher under the sink and make sure it’s twisted to the open position.

If the top rack of your dishwasher is not getting water it could be due to an issue with the dishwasher’s spray arm, rather than your dishwasher not filling. Mineral deposits from hard water can build up on parts of your dishwasher like the spray arms, ultimately impeding the flow of water. Improper loading of the dishwasher can also hinder the spray arms’ effectiveness. Ensure that no items are blocking or obstructing the spray arms from rotating. If taller items placed in the bottom rack are causing the issue, consider adjusting the top rack to allow the spray arms to move freely.

A small amount of water in the dishwasher’s filter area is normal, but an excessive amount can indicate a draining issue. After a cycle ends, water sits in the filter area (about halfway up the opening) to keep the seals from drying up, then is replaced by fresh water after the next cycle.

It’s not recommended to manually add water to your dishwasher. If you’ve verified that the water supply valve is turned on, the door is fully latched and you have the proper loop at the end of your dishwasher’s drain hose (usually about 20 inches above the floor), it may be time to call a professional.

Open the door mid-cycle and check the bottom of your dishwasher tub. If you notice the tub and dishes are still dry, your dishwasher isn’t getting any water. Your dishwasher may have low water if you notice moisture in the tub but top rack dishes still seem dirty or drier than usual, which can sometimes happen when the spray arm isn’t functioning properly.

Resetting your dishwasher can sometimes help resolve operation issues, so it may be worth a try. You can reset the control panel by disconnecting the dishwasher from power for at least 30 seconds, either through your home’s breaker or by unplugging the unit. Then plug it back in and/or turn the power back on.
