What’s the difference between Belgian waffles and other waffles?

The light, yet crisp texture along with larger, deeper squares is what sets the Belgian waffle apart from the others. Folding whipped egg whites into the Belgian waffle batter allows for a lighter texture and cooks up fluffier in the deep grooves of a Belgian waffle maker.

Homemade Belgian waffle recipe

Cultivate your kitchen creativity by including delectable homemade Belgian waffles in your culinary repertoire. Whether cooking for a special occasion or a delightful treat for yourself, this simple Belgian waffle recipe can help guide the process.

If you don’t have a Belgian waffle maker, you can use a regular waffle maker. It likely won’t create the larger, thicker, deeper grooves, but you may still end up with fluffier waffles. Keep in mind that the time it takes to make Belgian waffles may vary depending on serving size.

Step 2: Prepare stand mixer for whipping egg whites

Affix your stand mixer with the wire whip. Secure your mixing bowl. Make sure your mixing bowl and wire whip are clean. Any residue from previous use, especially fats like oil or butter, will interfere with the process.

Step 3: Whip egg whites

Place your egg whites along with a pinch of the salt (optional) in your mixing bowl. Whip ingredients on medium speed for 30 to 60 seconds or until frothy. Increase the stand mixer speed to high and whip until egg whites form stiff peaks. Set aside to incorporate into the ingredients later. You can either transfer your egg whites to another bowl, or use multiple stand mixer bowls to avoid deflating your whipped egg whites and cleaning your bowl between uses.

Step 4: Prepare stand mixer to incorporate dry ingredients

Attach the Flat Beater or Flex Edge Beater and the Sifter + Scale Attachment to your stand mixer. Secure a clean mixing bowl. If you would like more guidance on this, you can learn more with this guide on how to use a KitchenAid® stand mixer.

Step 7: Fold whipped egg whites

Turn your stand mixer on the lowest speed to gently fold the whipped egg whites into the mixing bowl. Watch the mixture closely to avoid over mixing or it may deflate the ingredients.

Step 8: Bake in waffle maker

Grease your waffle maker with oil or a non-stick spray. Pour a portion of Belgian waffle batter into your waffle maker and cook for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Check your waffle maker owner's manual for specific instructions.

Is Belgian waffle batter the same as pancake mix?

While both recipes have similar ingredients, the amounts differ. Belgian waffle batter requires more sugar, butter and eggs which lends to the golden brown color, the light, fluffy interior and crisp exterior. More milk in pancake batter results in a more cake-like texture.

Can I use Belgian waffle batter to make regular waffles?

Belgian waffles and regular waffles use the same ingredients, but the difference is in the technique. Whipped egg whites provide the light, fluffy texture in Belgian waffles. Regular waffle recipes usually skip this step, which creates a denser texture.

What kind of toppings can I serve with Belgian waffles?

From sweet to savory, Belgian waffles can be a mealtime favorite any time of day. With deeper reservoirs in their grid, they can easily hold delicious syrups, sauces, spreads, fruits, nuts, whipped cream, yogurt and more. You may even consider chicken and waffles for your next epicurean adventure.

Belgian waffles are a versatile treat that complement a variety of flavors, depending on your palate. With the ease of stand mixer attachments, you can expand your creativity in slicing or spiralizing fruits for toppings.
