Usage & cooking guidance

How do I get best outcome for my meat?

In order to get accurate results:

  1. Use a cut of meat that is at least 3/4 (0.75) inch thick.

  2. Insert the Thermometer Probe to at least the insertion mark. The best recommendation is to fully insert the

  3. Thermometer Probe into the meat so that there is no metal showing (up to the black ceramic top).

  4. Avoid any large fat pockets or air pockets in the meat.

  5. The temperature sensor is at the tip and middle of the Thermometer Probe, so make sure the center of the Thermometer Probe is not too close to the surface of the meat.

How do I get the best Bluetooth® connectivity?
  1. Keep the Dock close to the Thermometer, away from heat and water.

  2. Where possible, maintain line of sight between your device and Dock.

  3. Bluetooth® signal travels better through windows than walls when obstructed.

Where should I place my phone/tablet when cooking to ensure the app and thermometer stay connected?

As long as the Dock remains close to the Thermometer Probe (up to 5 ft), your mobile device should stay connected up to 225 ft away. Your distance may vary based on:

  • Walls, cooker construction/materials, environmental conditions and obstacles.

  • Device model and operating system.

Caution: Never leave cooking situations unattended.

Can I cook with metallic foil?

If your recipe calls for wrapping or covering meat in tinfoil, the Smart Thermometer must be pierced through the foil itself and into the meat.

Note: To maintain a connection, the black tip of the Thermometer Probe must be clear of any metallic foil obstruction.

Can I air fry?

Yes! KitchenAid® Smart Thermometer is great for air frying, handling ambient temperatures of up to 572°F and internal meat temperatures up to 212°F.

Be sure to keep the Dock next to your air fryer for continuous temperature monitoring while you cook.

Is the Smart Thermometer microwave-, pressure cooker-, steam oven- or slow cooker-safe?

No. Never expose the Thermometer Probe to excessive pressure, or use in the microwave.

We do not recommend using your Smart Thermometer in a Slow Cooker or Steam Cooker.

Do I have to insert the Thermometer Probe fully?

To get the best results and help protect your thermometer, always insert the thermometer past the insertion guide mark and in the thickest part of the meat. Failing to do so can result in an incorrect temperature reading and may trigger multiple overheating notifications.

Can I use it for anything other than meat?

No, the Smart Thermometer is designed for use with common and suitable cuts of meat only.

Is my Smart Thermometer in Sleep Mode?

If the Thermometer Probe is out of the Dock at room temperature (i.e. no change in the temperature reading) the Dock goes into sleep mode after 120 min. Once the Dock is in sleep mode, the LED light will turn off and Dock will terminate the Bluetooth® connection as it is in sleep mode.

When you put the Thermometer Probe into the Dock and remove it again, the Dock starts broadcasting data (Bluetooth® enabled). You can then see the status online/cooking on your phone as well.

How does the ambient temperature sensor work?

Ambient Temperature is the temperature of the air surrounding your food while it cooks. It may not exactly match your oven or grill's set temperature because your appliance cycles on and off to maintain heat, which can shift a little during cooking. Monitoring the ambient temperature helps you understand the actual cooking environment your food is experiencing.

The sensor in the black cap of the Thermometer Probe needs to be exposed to temperatures over 100°F to calculate an ambient temperature. Ambient temperature readings can take some time to calculate, in which case "--/--" will be displayed. The lower the temperature, the longer it can take.

When you select the Oven appliance type, the Ambient Temperature will not be shown. If you want to see the Ambient Temperature when using an oven, please toggle it on in the menu using the three dots (...) on the cook monitoring screen.

How do I change the cooking appliance after cook starts?

The type of appliance you use is an important input for the Smart Thermometer cooking algorithm. For this reason, if you need to change the appliance being used, you will have to click "Stop Monitoring" button and go through the cook setup process again choosing the new appliance this time. You will not lose the current temperature reading.

How do I check the battery charge status?

There are two places where you can see the battery charge status of the Smart Thermometer in the KitchenAid App.

From the Home Screen

  1. Tap on the "Home" button and access your list of connected devices.

  2. Selecting Smart Thermometer takes you to the Smart Thermometer Dashboard.

  3. Tap the three dots ("...") next to the desired Smart Thermometer to see the battery charge levels for the Thermometer Probe and Dock.

  2. Tap on the battery icon to see the battery charge levels for the Thermometer Probe and Dock.

Note: The battery charge level shown will depend on which object has the lowest charge at that moment in time (i.e Thermometer Probe or Dock).

What are the temperature limits?

The KitchenAid® Smart Thermometer, when correctly used, can withstand:

  • Up to 212° Fahrenheit (100° Celsius) of internal meat temperature and 572° Fahrenheit (300° Celsius) of ambient cooking temperature for any duration of time.

  • Flare-ups of 1100° Fahrenheit (593° Celsius) for up to 3 minutes.

Caution: The Dock should never be placed on a hot surface.

How do I add additional or multiple Smart Thermometers?

There are two places to add multiple Smart Thermometers in the KitchenAid App:

From the Home Screen

  1. Tap on the "Home" button (lower left-hand corner of your screen) to access your list of devices.

  2. In the upper right corner click the "+" sign and select "New Smart Thermometer" to add a new Smart Thermometer.

From the Dashboard

  1. Tap on the list of Smart Thermometers to access the Smart Thermometer Dashboard.

  2. Once on that screen, click the black "+" in the lower right corner of the screen to add a new Smart Thermometer.

  • After one Smart Thermometer is added, you can add another Smart Thermometer.

  • You can connect up to four Smart Thermometers in total.

How do I navigate in the app while multiple Smart Thermometers are cooking?
  1. Set up each cook session separately.

  2. Once you’ve selected the Meat, Doneness and Appliance type for one, it will take you to the cooking screen.

  3. Tap the back arrow in the upper left-hand corner to get back to your list of devices from where you can setup an additional Smart Thermometer if you would like following the same process.

  4. Once running multiple cooks, you can return to your list of devices to select a cook to focus on or monitor all simultaneously in the Dashboard.

Does it matter which Docks I put my Thermometer Probes back into when my food is ready?

Each Dock communicates with one Thermometer Probe while cooking. While it doesn't matter which Dock you place a Thermometer Probe in outside of a cook cycle, placing it in the wrong Dock while it is actively communicating with another Thermometer Probe mid-cooking cycle will interrupt the connection.

To avoid any issues, be sure to:

  • Place the cooking Thermometer Probe back into the cooking Dock or

  • Place the non-cooking Thermometer Probe into another Dock and ensure that the cooking Dock is the closest "active" Dock to the cooking Thermometer Probe (upon which it will reconnect)

Note: Keep all non-cooking Thermometer Probes out of Docks until the cook session is complete.

How do I resolve connection issues while cooking with multiple Smart Thermometers?

Each Dock communicates with one Thermometer Probe while cooking. While it doesn't matter which Dock you place a Thermometer Probe in outside of a cook cycle, placing in the wrong Dock while it is actively communicating with another Thermometer Probe mid-cooking cycle will interrupt the connection.

If you experience this issue, you can reset your probes by:

  • Ensuring that the "cooking" Dock is the closest "active" Dock to the cooking Thermometer Probe and has no probe in it. This should allow the Thermometer Probe and Dock to reconnect automatically.

  • Removing the Thermometer Probe mid-cooking cycle and place back into a Dock to reset its connection to that Dock.

To avoid this issue, wait to return your Thermometer Probes to a Dock until all simultaneous cook cycles are complete.

Note: If your disconnection issue is not related to this multi-thermometer use case, please refer to other aspects of this support guide for help.

How do I cook the perfect Turkey?

Here are some cooking tips to make sure that your Turkey is crispy, juicy and evenly cooked:

  1. Unfreeze your Turkey. Thaw it to at least 45°F before roasting.

  2. Fully insert the Thermometer Probe into the deepest part of the Turkey Breast so that there is no metal showing (just the black ceramic top).

  3. Roast to at least 165°F to make sure all parts are evenly cooked.

  4. Stay connected to your Dock. Position the pan so your Thermometer Probe is near the oven door.

My Turkey has pink juices. Is it safe to eat?

A Turkey with pink juices is perfectly safe to eat if the meat has reached 165°F in both the breast and thigh. Check the temperature in both areas, as they can cook at different rates.

The pink juices are caused by a protein called myoglobin that’s stored within the muscles and is found mixed with water as the pink fluid. Depending on the acidity (pH) of the meat, which can vary from one turkey to the next, the myoglobin may not change color until the meat reaches as high as 180°F — and that would result in an overcooked Turkey.

How do I cook the perfect Roast?

Here are some cooking tips to make sure that your Roast comes out perfectly:

  1. Fully insert the Thermometer Probe so there is no metal showing (just the black ceramic top).

  2. Avoid any large fat pockets or air pockets in the meat. This cut is especially fatty so you want to be extra careful to be in the thickest part of the roast.

  3. The temperature sensor is at the tip and middle of the Thermometer Probe, so make sure the center of the Thermometer Probe is not too close to the surface of the meat

  4. For the juiciest meat and most even cooking, let big Roasts rest a full 30 minutes, but aim for at least 20 minutes for any size Roast.

How long does a Roast need to rest?

For the juiciest meat and most even cooking, let big Roasts rest a full 30 minutes, but aim for at least 20 minutes for any size Roast.

How do I best cook Prime Rib?

If you are having issues getting the right results on your Prime Rib, make sure that you use the cooking setup for Beef > Roast. Using another cooking setup, including Manual mode may yield inaccurate results.

Prime Rib or Rib Roast is an especially fatty piece of meat. Make sure that your Thermometer Probe is inserted all the way to the black ceramic end, and that you are not hitting any air or fat pockets in the meat.

Troubleshooting

What do I do if my Thermometer Probe gets disconnected while cooking?

The KitchenAid App will automatically attempt to reconnect for 24 hrs continuously while there is an active cook. After 24 hrs, you will see a Reconnect Button. Adjust some of the below elements to aid in re-establishing connection if in the midst of the cooking process:

  • Keep the Dock as close a possible to the Thermometer Probe, away from heat and water.

  • Make sure the Thermometer Probe is not directly in a flame.

  • Where possible, limit the number of obstructions between the Dock and the Thermometer Probe including walls and other Bluetooth® Devices.

  • When cooking outside, keep the Dock near a window if you can't put it next to the appliance.

  • Point the Thermometer Probe in the direction of the Dock.

  • Ensure the Thermometer Probe is not touching any metal part of the cooking appliance or pan.

  • If using a foil, wrap the food first and then insert the Thermometer Probe, leaving the black ceramic cap exposed.

  • Ensure the Thermometer Probe is charged. Place the Thermometer Probe in the Dock to charge for 5 minutes and attempt reconnection again.

  • Temporarily turn off other Bluetooth® devices from your device.

If the disconnection is sustained, the following steps are recommended:

  • Remove Thermometer Probe from the food and clean.

  • On your mobile device under Bluetooth® settings, forget/delete Smart Thermometer.

  • Place the Thermometer Probe in Dock and restart the Bluetooth® connection process.

Why am I getting inaccurate results?

There is no way to calibrate the KitchenAid® Smart Thermometer.

If the internal temperature readings are incorrect or inaccurate, make sure you:

  • Fully insert the Thermometer Probe so there is no metal showing (just the black ceramic top).

  • Use a cut of meat that is at least 3/4 inch thick.

  • Avoid any large fat pockets or air pockets in the meat.

  • Make sure the Smart Thermometer is not too close to the surface of the meat.

You can also do a quick test to check the calibration of your Thermometer Probe:

  • Add some water and ice to a cup (no more than 2.5 inch worth).

  • Let it cool for a few minutes.

  • In the KitchenAid App, after you press the Set Up Cook button, select the “manual” mode setup, the first option (see screenshots).

  • Place the stainless steel portion of the Thermometer Probe into the ice water. The app should show the temperature drop to 32-36 degrees.

Why won't my Thermometer Probe charge in the Dock?

Sorry to hear you're having issues charging your KitchenAid® Smart Thermometer Probe.

Let's try a couple of troubleshooting steps that fix most issues.

Ensure Dock battery is charged.

Connect USB cable to Dock and power source. When charging the Thermometer Probe in the Dock, make sure that the top of the Thermometer Probe and the charging prong on the Dock are clean, and have strong contact with each other.
